SLASPA WORKERS TEMPORARILY RESORT TO STRIKE ACTION OVER SALARY DISPUTE

MBC Prime has learned monthly paid workers employed by the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority on March 29 withdrew their services amid an unresolved industrial dispute. Operations at the shipping container facility at Port Castries, which is managed by SLASPA, were disrupted as a result of an industrial flare up MBC Prime understands. SLASPA management and the National Workers Union who represents monthly paid workers have been at the negotiation table to hammer out the details of a proposed wage increase. SLASPA officials told MBC Prime the operations resumed after an “emergency meeting” was held. The National Workers Union who did not confirm or deny the alleged strike action says a public statement will be issued on the status of negotiations in the coming days. MBC Prime sources say the workers represented by NWU have rejected a 1% salary increase offered by SLASPA. The workers are holding out for a reported 6% salary bump.
