MICOUD SOUTH MP DENIED SALARY FOR SKIPPING HOUSE MEETINGS

Reelected Micoud South MP and Leader of the Opposition Allen Chastanet now holds the unenviable accolade of being the first Member of Parliament to be denied a salary for missing consecutive Lower House meetings. During the November 16 House Sitting, Speaker Claudius Francis explained the method of communication used by Mr. Chastanet to issue notice of his absence did not conform to the Standing Orders of the House of Assembly. As a consequence Speaker Francis’ ruling has established new precedent in the Lower House and serves as a strong reminder to MPs to adhere to the House rules.
