MAYOR’S RE-APPOINTMENT

Concerns have been raised regarding the future operations of the Castries Constituencies Council following the re-appointment of Castries Mayor Peterson Francis. The President of the Craft and Dry Goods Vendors Association, Peter “Ras Ipa” Isaac stated that the re-appointment of the Castries Mayor was no surprise but has called for constitutional reform in an effort to rid out corruption on the island. The Castries Mayor and the President of the Craft and Dry Goods Vendors Association have been involved in brief standoffs that ended quietly. Senior News correspondent Cecile Actille reports.

US EASE SANCTIONS ON SAINT LUCIA POLICE FORCE

The United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean on June 18 announced the State Department has agreed to modify the Leahy Law sanctions currently imposed on the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force. Now, select police units will regain access to US funded assistance eight years after the sanctions were handed down as a consequence of alleged extrajudicial killings by police officers during the infamous Operation Restore Confidence anti-crime initiative back in 2010/11.
