Prime Minister Philip J Pierre offered a long awaited apology to Saint Lucia’s Rastafarian community during a landmark debate in the Lower House on September 14 to decriminalize cannabis possession. Rastafarians use cannabis as a religious sacrament. However, the previous Drugs Act made cannabis possession a criminal offence and violated the religious freedoms of the Rastafarian minority. The Labour Party Administration has amended the Drugs Act permitting consumption and possession of up to 30 grams of cannabis for adults.
