So-called ‘high risk’ countries with sky high COVID-19 infection rates pose a significant threat to island destinations like Saint Lucia whose economy depends on tourism revenue. To date, two COVID-19 variants of concern, detected on island, are linked to a deluge of new infections and dozens of COVID related deaths. Appeals for a border closure were shut down by the Chief Medical Officer who explained the existing data does not warrant hardline travel bans.
