ARE THE COVID-19 PROTOCOLS PLACING STUDENTS IN HARM’S WAY AT HOME?

With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping students at home and out of the physical classrooms, the Education Ministry is reporting a concerning rise in child abuse and teen pregnancy. The COVID related disruptions to the academic year has apparently placed school aged students at greater risk of abuse and exploitation. Acting Chief Education Officer Cirus Cepal noted in the last year a number of secondary school girls became pregnant. In a September 12 back to school address, Education Minister Shawn Edward revealed some students, “…have fallen prey…” to abuse.
